Try Linux!
Linux is a freely distributable UNIX-clone for PC's and other architectures.
It comes with all of the workstation goodies you'd expect: X-windows, a
full development environment (g++, gdb, etc.), user interface tools
(Interviews, Tcl/Tk), graphics and plotting tools (xfig, xv, and gnuplot),
and all sorts of other useful stuff. Best of all, Bill Gates hasn't gotten
his grubby paws on any of it.
