Smoke-Wires
The figure above shows a sketch of the wind tunnel test section viewed from above. Flow enters from the left, passes through the blade section and then empties into the room. A red line in the figure shows the location of an array of smoke-wires used in the flow visualizations to follow. Eight wires are placed parallel to the bottom wall of the test section, like the cross-bars on a fence. They lie both within and outside the endwall boundary layer.

Oil is spread on the wires, and they are electrically heated to produce smoke. The smoke traces follow the flow through the turbine blades and can be identified individually through the passage.
