The research done in lifetime prediction involves investigating crack propagation in degraded polymers and antioxidant (AO) depletion in polyethylene. In the former, a technique is utilized to evaluate crack growth in polymers exposed to chlorinated water as a function of the extent of degradation. In the latter, both antioxidant loss and mechanical degradation are characterized so they can be used as a conservative estimate for the lifetime of polymers in hot water containing chlorine concentrations found in potable water.
