Research Summary

The laboratory is a computer-intensive environment for building and running computationally demanding intelligent decision support tools. Currently the lab has a set of NT machines and a set of UNIX machines for dedicated use in CAD/CAM and other applications.

Current work in the lab consists of the following projects:

FOX

Principal Investigator: Caroline Hayes
Sponsor: Army Research Laboratory
Goal: To build effective decision support tools for military planning
Research Questions:

• What type of decisions must be made?
• What information flow is needed to make them?
• What types of cognitive spatial and temporal representations are needed for effective user interaction?

CO-RAVEN

Principal Investigators: Caroline Hayes and Patricia Jones
Sponsor: Army Research Laboratory

• Goal: To build a decision support tool to facilitate collaboration decision making when members of the decision making team may be located at distant geographic locations.
• Research Question: How can one design and build effective tools to support team collaboration over distance?

TASK BUILDER

Principal Investigator: Caroline Hayes
Sponsor: Airforce

• Goal: To understand how the structure of decisions in a task, and the required information flows, help to determine the structure of an agent-based system.
• A big challenge in agent-based systems is how to design the structure and communications between agents so as to make an efficient system.
