After creating a cylinder, which should be your base feature for the barrel, this is how you can shape the barrel's end.

While in the feature menu (which is accessed from the Part menu) make the following menu commands in the order shown.

#CREATE
#CUT
#REVOLVE
#DONE
#DONE

You will then be prompted to select a sketching plane. The plane to select is one of the datum planes which runs along the length of the barrel. You will then be asked if the direction indicated by the arrow shown in the drawing is okay. Pick OK since the direction of the arrow is unimportant in this case.

You will then be prompted to select the other reference direction for your sketch. Select one of the other two datum planes as the bottom reference. Whatever plane you select will appear as the horizontal plane in the sketcher. After making this selection you should then be placed in the sketcher.

In the same way that you have previously made revolved solids, you can make a revolved cut.

Remember that you must draw a center line to indicate the axis about which you wish to revolve your cut. For this case the center line should coincide with the center axis of the solid cylinder you have already created.

After creating a center line as described above, you can shape one of the ends to look like the barrel tip. Keep in mind that you are creating a cut, which means that whatever you sketch will be removed from the cylinder. All the same procedures are the same for making a revolved cut as they are for making a revolved solid. The only difference is that whatever you draw removes existing material instead of creating new material. (Hint: Try using a right triangle whose legs coincide with the end tip and side wall edges respectively of the cylinder. The hypotenuse is then a diagonal line connecting the two open end points of the legs.)

After properly dimensioning and aligning your cut feature, as usual you must regenerate it, modify your dimensions, then regenerate again. After this successful regeneration select DONE from the sketcher menu. You will be prompted to select which region you wish to remove, the inside of the sketched figure you have drawn or the outside. Make sure that the arrow points into the region you wish to remove before selecting OK. If it does not, select FLIP, then select OKAY.

Things to Remember
  • ALIGNMENT: Don't forget to align the centerline you sketched to the axis of the cylinder you created earlier.
  • CLOSURE: All revolved entities in Pro/E must be closed forms. This means that every shape you sketch must have a clear inside and outside. Examples of closed forms are triangles, squares, circles.
