(Contributed by Joe Butzer)

By using the features laid out in "A Beginner's Guide to Pro Engineer", it is pretty easy to get the dimensions set up the way you want. Sometimes the default settings of Pro Engineer, and the space limitations of the drawing can make some of the dimensions confusing. You may want to create a new dimension to clear up your drawing.
To do this:
  • Begin with arranging all the dimensions as best you can. If you are still not satisfied you will want to modify your drawing. First, erase unwanted dimensions by using the Erase function under the Detail menu. Then locate the best place to position a dimension to make your drawing more readable. You will need to identify two features on your drawing for Pro Engineer to calculate a new dimension.
  • Under the detail menu, click on Create, in the Create drop down window click on Dimension. You will now be asked to select two features that identify your new dimension. By picking two points or features, Pro/Engineer will calculate the distance. Remember to use Query Select so you select the dimension you want. When done selecting click on Done.
  • Your new dimension will appear with leaders, and it can be moved around like any other dimension. One important note, you can not modify the value of a created dimension. It can be changed with a little patience in a round about way.
  • First go to the Show function and click on Dimension. You will want to click on Show All. This will then regenerate all the dimensions you erased. Delete the created dimension you want to change. Then modify the regenerated dimension values as needed. When done with modification, erase all unnecessary dimensions, and recreate the new dimension. It will automatically be recalculated by Pro/Engineer to the new value.
