(Contributed by Eric Engelmann)

One thing I found out that was very helpful as I went about cleaning up the dimensioning on my drawings was that a dimension on a circular figure could be moved to a different location about it. This feature came in handy when I had many diameters stacked on top of each other vertically along one of the datum planes. It allowed me to separate them and orient them differently with respect to one another so that the drawing became easier to read. It also helped in identifying the diameter of the cut that rounded off the hexagon, because it allowed me to place the dimension line between two of the visible rounded surfaces, rather than between two points on the circular cut that were not seen in the drawing. The procedure for doing this is as follows:
  1. Create or retrieve a dimensioned drawing.
  2. From the Drawing menu, select the Detail option.
  3. Once in the Detail menu, select the Mod Attach option.
  4. You will now be prompted to "Pick a detail item to move attach", so use either Query Select or Pick to select the dimension you wish to move about a CIRCULAR feature of the drawing.

NOTE: This command only works for moving dimensions about features in a drawing that actually APPEAR circular. For this reason, if you try to select a dimension for a part that you know is circular but it is on a view that doesn't actually show it as a circle on the screen, the computer won't allow you to use this feature!!
  5. Once you have selected the dimension to move attach, simply use the mouse to "rotate" the dimension about the circle. (As you will see, the dimension line, the leader line, and the dimension itself all are moved as a unit in the Mod Attach, unlike when using the move feature to attempt this, which doesn't allow you to change the position of the dimension line.)
  6. When the dimension is in the new location desired, hit the left mouse button and it will be placed there.
  7. You should now be able to continue.
