Environmentally Benign Manufacturing by Timothy G. Gutowski Wednesday, May 2, 2001 Is Environmentally Benign Manufacturing an oxymoron, or is it possible to align business goals with environmental goals? In this talk I will review the results of a recent year long NSF Panel study that looked at environmentally benign manufacturing in Japan, Europe and the United States. Some of the results may surprise you. This review will outline our findings in four areas; 1) industry motivation, 2) regional differences, 3) systems level issues and 4) technology. Examples from the study, available at "http://itri.loyola.edu/ebm/" mid-May, will be used to illustrate these points. Dr. Timothy G. Gutowski is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Director of the Laboratory for Manufacturing and Productivity (LMP) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is the North American Editor for the international journal Composites, Part A Manufacturing and Applied Science, and Associate Editor for the Journal of Manufacturing Systems. Dr. Gutowski has over 100 technical publications including 7 patents and his recent book entitled "Advanced Composites Manufacturing", published by John Wiley in 1997. In 1989 he was named an M.I.T. Leaders for Manufacturing Professor. Informal Faculty Luncheon: Wednesday, May 2, 2001, 12:00 noon. A table is reserved at McCormick's Restaurant, Radisson Hotel Metrodome. Prof. Gutowski will be able to attend. |
