The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota announces openings for six new full-time tenure-track or tenured positions in the broad areas of nanotechnology, medical devices, energy and fluid power. Successful applicants will complement existing strength areas of the department in heat and mass transfer, design, systems and controls, aerosol science and technology, biomechanical engineering, and plasma science and technology. The candidate’s engineering expertise and documented research activity must demonstrate a strong potential toward enhancing both the undergraduate teaching and the graduate teaching and research missions of the department. Successful candidates are expected to build strong, externally-funded, highly-visible research programs and to become recognized leaders in the field. The broad areas of the search are congruent with major Institute of Technology and Department of Mechanical Engineering initiatives for growth. The University of Minnesota’s Institute of Technology includes departments of engineering, physical sciences, computer science and mathematics – a nationally unique structure that facilitates interdisciplinary collaborations. Applicants must have a doctorate in mechanical engineering or a closely related discipline. Rank will depend upon the qualifications and experience of the applicants. The Department of Mechanical Engineering has a strong tradition of excellence in education and research. The department currently has 41 tenured or tenure-track faculty and graduates about 200 undergraduate students annually. It is home to graduate programs in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial and Systems Engineering, with a total graduate enrollment of about 250 M.S. and Ph.D. students. The department is home to a new NSF Engineering Research Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power. On-Going Posting for Adjunct PositionsThe Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota is receiving and evaluating applications from candidates for temporary teaching appointments in the day and evening. Applications are being collected for Adjunct Instructor and Adjunct Assistant Professor or Adjunct Associate Professor (and visiting associations) level, depending on qualifications, in the areas of design, manufacturing, thermal sciences and industrial engineering. Individuals would be responsible for teaching one or more courses in design, manufacturing, thermal sciences or industrial engineering. Necessary qualifications include: (1) Masters or Ph.D. in Engineering (for selected courses Masters degree or Ph.D. in another discipline may be accepted); (2) industrial experience, (3) teaching experience at the university level in one of the areas listed above. The Department maintains a file of applicants for these temporary adjunct positions for the current fiscal year (1 July 2007 through 30 June 2008).
