ASHRAE Scholarship

The Minnesota chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) will award a $2,000 scholarship, or two $1,000 scholarships, to students who meets the following criteria:

  1. Maintains a College of Science and Engineering GPA of at least 3.0 and pursues a degree in mechanical engineering.
  2. Shows an interest in the specialized field of heating, refrigeration and air conditioning and plans to take at least one course in these areas.
  3. Supports energy conservation and sustainability.
  4. Joins the ASHRAE Student Section, plans to attend two local ASHRAE meetings and considers a career in heating, ventilating, air conditioning or refrigeration.
  5. Demonstrates an interest in community service.

Background

  • ASHRAE was founded in 1894. ASHRAE is an international organization of some 50,000 personnel. ASHRAE's mission is to advance heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education.

  • The ASHRAE Scholarship Chair and Treasurer will meet with the scholarship recipient and/or academic advisor at the University of Minnesota in January to assure that the student receiving the check has met the above criteria and personally deliver the check. The scholarship will be awarded as one of the Mechanical Engineering Departmental Scholarships.

  • The ASHRAE Scholarship Chair will attend a Donor meeting, organized by the academic institution in the Fall of the year of the award, to have a chance to meet the successful student and review their future career.

     

Additional Independent ASHRAE $3,000 Scholarship Opportunity

In addition to the scholarships described above, ASHRAE offers the ASHRAE Minnesota Chapter Scholarship. This scholarship is independent of the scholarships offered through the Mechanical Engineering Department and must be applied for separately. The ASHRAE Minnesota Chapter Scholarship is a regional award and is available to students enrolled in other regional schools in addition to the University of Minnesota. It is possible for a single student to be awarded both an ASHRAE scholarship through the Mechanical Engineering Department and the ASHRAE Minnesota Chapter Scholarship. Few students have applied for the ASHRAE Minnesota Chapter Scholarship in recent years; you are encouraged to do so.

Applicants for the ASHRAE Minnesota Chapter scholarship must have cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.0 and/or a class standing of no less than the top 30%. The annual application deadline is December 1st.
